Now that summer is officially over and school is back in session, we can sit back and enjoy the open roads (and beaches) free from traffic. While less crowded, sea turtles are still laying eggs, so we need to be cautious as we head to the beach. Here are a few tips that will help keep this beautiful species alive and thriving!
- Sea turtle nesting season is May through October.
- Approximately 40 - 60 days after nesting, the tiny hatchlings head for the Gulf of Mexico.
- Here on the Emerald Coast, we have a Sea Turtle Watch that checks the beach every morning for new nests and ensures they are marked.
This time of year we must be careful when walking along the beach. If you see any holes, please fill them in, as baby sea turtles could fall in while trying to get back to the ocean. You will also sometimes find signs and tape where a nest is located. This is to ensure no one steps on the nest and keeps those passing by on their toes!
We love our beaches, but we also love our wildlife! Sea turtle nesting season is an outstanding time of year, so watch your step and be on the lookout while enjoying the most beautiful beaches of the Gulf Coast!
